The following statement was released by the Cleveland Clinic on Monday April 6, 2009: Ms. Charla Nash remains hospitalized at the Cleveland Clinic and is currently in “critical but stable” condition. In mid-February, she suffered extensive traumatic injuries to her face, hands and eyes after the attack.

Over the past ten days, Ms. Nash has made significant neurological and psychological improvement. She is now awake and is able to communicate with her family and caregivers. However, full cognitive recovery could take up to a year. As we have begun to communicate with her, it is clear that her injury has left her completely blind in both eyes, with no chance for improvement.

At this time, her doctors are planning the first phase of reconstructive surgery with input from Ms. Nash and her family. The first procedure will focus on restoring critical function and preventing infection. Over time, surgical efforts will address her more complex functional needs and improve her aesthetics. The entire process will likely take numerous surgeries over the next two years. Her initial reconstructive surgery will be focused solely on her facial trauma and not her hands, as these wounds have been stabilized. Discussion or consideration for a face transplant is premature at this time.

The physical and emotional well-being of our patient and her family during this long process is our utmost priority and will be the focus of her future care plans. The family is hopeful and continues to be grateful to those who have been concerned about her recovery.”

About Donations: The Nash family would like to thank all those that have made donations, those who have sent their well wishes in letters and cards, and to those who simply keep Charla in their thoughts and in their prayers. The monetary donations are even that much more significant and moving considering the current economic times. Charla’s family understands that everyone has their own problems and concerns and despite this, so many have offered their kind support. This support is very much appreciated and has meant a great deal to the family members suffering through this ordeal.

We have received some inquiries regarding the donations made and where they will be going. Please know that all sums collected will be used for Charla’s care and the care of her daughter. Aside from a small percentage paid in administrative costs (phone bank and credit card cost), 100% of the funds go to Charla. The law firm assisting Charla (Feldman, Kramer, & Monaco) is not taking a fee for assisting with the donations. Administrative costs were either waived by those involved or kept at a very low minimum to insure that as much as possible benefits Charla directly.

UPDATE ON CHARLA’S CONDITION: NOVEMBER 21, 2011
Charla Nash reveals her new face on the Today Show:

On February 16, 2009, in Stamford, Connecticut, Charla Nash was viciously attacked by a 14 year old chimpanzee owned by Sandra Herold and kept by Ms. Herold in her home as a pet. Charla had been called by Ms. Herold to her home to try to assist in controlling the chimp, who was running loose outside the Herold residence. When Charla arrived and exited her vehicle, the chimpanzee immediately attacked her, and inflicted horrific injuries on Charla. Emergency personnel responded to Ms. Herold’s 911 call and the police were ultimately forced to shoot and kill the animal. Charla was brought to Stamford Hospital, where she endured 7 hours of lifesaving surgery. She was then transferred to the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, where she remains.
